Client brief

The client arrived with a clear vision: a sapphire engagement ring that offered something different from the traditional diamond, but with equal presence and sophistication. She requested a marquise center stone in royal blue, complemented by diamonds along the band to balance the bold color with classic sparkle. The goal was a design that felt both regal and wearable, with the elongating effect of the marquise cut and enough metal options to suit her personal style.

Stone selection

The stone selection began with the 1.5-carat marquise lab-grown sapphire, chosen for its saturated royal blue hue and precise 11x5.5mm proportions. To complement this centerpiece, we selected 0.35 carats of lab-grown diamonds in VS clarity and E-F color, ensuring brilliant white sparkle that would frame rather than compete with the blue. The final 0.1 carats of lab-grown blue sapphires were matched to echo the center stone's depth, creating chromatic harmony across the entire band.

Setting design

We translated her vision into detailed 3D renders that mapped the precise placement of each stone along the band. The marquise sapphire was positioned in a six-prong setting to secure its elongated shape, while the side stones were arranged in a graduated pattern that tapered toward the back. We explored spacing intervals to ensure the round diamonds and oval blue sapphires created visual rhythm without crowding. Once she approved the proportions and taper, we locked the design for production. The marquise center stone required a secure yet elegant setting to protect its delicate points while maximizing light return. Our setter crafted a six-prong head in 14k yellow gold, lifting the 11x5.5mm sapphire just high enough to allow the graduated band stones to flow seamlessly beneath. The prongs were shaped to follow the marquise outline, ensuring stability without blocking the stone's profile. The low cathedral shoulders integrated the round and oval accent stones in a way that felt intentional rather than added, creating one continuous line from shank to center.

Final result

The finished ring exceeded expectations, transforming a beautiful centerpiece into a complete narrative in precious metal. The 1.5-carat marquise sapphire commanded attention while the graduated diamonds and blue sapphires created sophisticated movement along the 14k gold band. In hand, the piece felt substantial yet refined, each of the 1.95 total carats contributing to a design that appeared intentional rather than assembled. The client's vision of cohesion was realized—no longer a stone on a band, but a unified expression of royal blue elegance.
